Risky Business Melbourne

15 July, 2010

As part of the ACMP's ongoing commitment to provide educational and entertaining seminars for the industry, on July 15 we had a very privileged night with Risky Business. Nikon Ambassador Mark Watson gave us an intimate insight into his career and talked us through many examples of his inspiring problem solving that has made him one of the world's best extreme sports photographers. ACMP Member Gemma Carr writes about the night.

You never know where you will end up when you go to an ACMP event. Sure, you will get to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones too. You may gain some new technical insights. Occasionally, if you're lucky, you will get taken into another world.

On a cold wintery Melbourne night, a group of Melbourne photographers headed out to Phoenix Studios for our latest dose of ACMP goodness. On this occasion we learned a little about risk management for our own businesses, followed by a wonderful insight into the adventurous world of photographer Mark Watson.

The event kicked off with the mandatory ACMP pre-event nibbles and drinks and it was great to see a mix of attendees extending outside of ACMP members to include AIPP members and some RMIT students armed with questions.

Pretty quickly things got underway with a presentation by Morris Winestonefrom our trade affiliate Winestone & Associates. Morris took to the stage and outlined the numerous benefits of having income protection insurance. It was alarming to realise how few of the attendees were not insured, reminding us of why tonight's event was titled "Risky Business".

Next off the mark was.... Mark. Mark Watson's photography credentials look pretty impressive on paper and his images are certainly remarkable. But, it was getting to see behind the Nikon Ambassador exterior that was what made Mark truly inspirational. Mark took us into his world, first by smacking us in the face with a slideshow of his extreme sports photography that could seriously cause motion sickness. Then Mark took us behind the scenes of how he get's "the shot" and the amazing lengths he will go to do so.

Mark Watson is one of (if not the only) Australia's only photographers who makes his living out of primarily shooting extreme sports. His career's footsteps span across the globe, dangling off cliff edges, deep in the snow and buried in the mud. Some would call this highly specialised approach to his photography career risky; surely it's best not to put all one's eggs in one basket?

On the contrary Mark has followed his niche, stuck at it and excelled as a true specialist in his CHOSEN field. This is an almighty powerful thing to witness.

So, thanks to Mark for sharing an intimate insight into your career so far.

Next time the ACMP host an event near you, I think it's well worth facing the cold and getting yourself there. You never know whose world you will get to see.

    ACMP: 13 December, 2011

A picture may be worth 1,000 words, but permanently attached descriptions are worth a lot more as photos travel through the digital world. A campaign has been launched now to embed descriptive and rights information in digital media and to retain it during the whole life cycle.
The initiative has been launched by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A's), and the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), with the support of trade organisations, including the ACMP, representing visual arts and photo agencies. It aims to establish the practice of applying descriptions and the copyright status of the content as metadata, and to embed it permanently during the electronic exchange of digital photo, text, audio or video files.
