Upcoming Events QLD

I thought I'd quickly post that the Gold Coast has 2 fantastic music and cultural events coming up in the next month.

Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival 24 - 27 May 2012

Transcending the barriers of age, gender and culture Blues on Broadbeach is one of Australia’s most iconic Blues Festivals. The Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival is unique as it feeds on the unique village like atmosphere and relaxed ambience that is Broadbeach.

The Blues on Broadbeach Music festival nurtures Australian Blues talent as well as providing a stage for international acts. The festival provides a musical experience like no other in Queensland, whilst still remaining a FREE and non-ticketed event.

Blues music is food for the soul and this festival combines the best of blues with the cream of the Gold Coast cuisine in a guaranteed recipe for success.

A couple of us are already planning to go at some stage over the weekend (time still to be decided) Further details about the festival can be found here http://www.bluesonbroadbeach.com/

Also for 11 days in early June the Cooly Rocks On Festival is being held at Coolangatta.

Cooly Rocks On is a 50s and 60s based nostalgia festival run over the borders of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads every June. The festival consists of a car show of 1200+ hot rods, custom and classic cars and Rock ‘n Roll, Rockabilly and Swing entertainment over 11 days. Cooly Rocks On also delivers a surf precinct in Kirra and is made up of many shows, displays and fun for all the family. The festival is free to enter and the program builds up over the year to bring visitors a very popular event visited by over 50,000 people.

Full details are here. http://coolyrockson.com.au/menu/cars I'll be going to check out the cars which are on display on the weekend of 9th and 10th June. If anyone wants to come along and meet up feel free to give me a call on 0404 728 381 or email me at admin@reavolve.com to find out where we are meeting up. I'll probably be attending the festivals on the Sundays.

Posted to: Upcoming Events QLD Show Thread | Post Reply

Re: Mentorships and assisting for emerging photographers?

Hi Lisa

I'm glad to hear the board looking at what can be improved. I didn't realise that the ACMP was run by volunteers when I first joined. I thought it was more like a small union with full time staff which is why I was confused when our posts/questions weren't getting any response after several days. I can certainly understand why things happen more slowly than I expected now that I know everyone is also working full time in their own studios. It really puts things into perspective and I really appreciate the work you guys do.

I would like to second Roberts idea of a welcome pack for new members. I think one way to do this that would be to have a redirection set up for new members when they first login (which most would do immediately after payment) If you create a welcome page within the My Account section and have that as the landing page for new members then it could carry some really important information like contact details of event organisers & how to register for upcoming events, a link to the Find a photographer directory for the members home state. It would also be really handy to have some details about who is on the board and who to contact. It might be a good idea to also have a member in each state make contact via email to new members (have an alert sent to them when someone new joins) so that they can welcome them and give them a quick outline of how things work. Alternatively it could be done as part of the email confirmation with payment.

Rob,

Sorry to hear you won't be around for the Broadbeach Blues Festival. I hope you enjoy your trip OS Check your diary and see if you're free on the weekend of 9th & 10th June. The Cooly Rocks On festival is on and that weekend has the classic cars display. (more info below)

Storm, I look forward to meeting you at the Broadbeach Blues fest.

If anyone else wants to come along to the Broadbeach Blues festival you are more than welcome to join us. Further details about the festival can be found here http://www.bluesonbroadbeach.com/ and feel free to give me a call on 0404 728 381 or email me at admin@reavolve.com to find out where we are.

Also for 11 days in early June the Cooly Rocks On Festival is being held at Coolangatta. It features heaps of vintage retro 50's and 60's events and 1200 classic cars and hotrods. Full details are here. http://coolyrockson.com.au/menu/cars I'll be going to check out the cars which are on display on the weekend of 9th and 10th June. If anyone wants to come along and meet up just let me know. I'll probably be going on the Sunday. I'll repost these details in a separate topic thread as well.

Posted to: Mentorships and assisting for emerging photographers? Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi Rob great work!

I'm happy to travel to Brisbane, Tuesday nights should be fine as long as I have enough notice to block it out on my schedule. I'm happy to make it a regular thing like the 1st tuesday of each month etc.

Your idea of getting in a sales rep reminded me of someone I met recently. I recently did some shopping at Digital Camera Warehouse and was invited along to a meeting of the Aspley Camera Club as they were having a hands on demonstration of studio lighting equipment. I went along hoping to learn more about the systems on sale and how each one differs, but unfortunately it was a very basic 'this is a studio flash, this is why you might want one'. I only say unfortunately because it took me over an hr to get there and it wasn't what I travelled for lol.

The demo was put on by a rep from Adkarl http://www.adkarl.com/ they supply some great products and I'm sure if there were a few of us (probably need at least 6 people to come) then they might do a more in-depth demonstration for us. We might even be able to arrange some special deals.

Alternatively, we might be able to arrange something through DragonImage, Digital Camer warehouse or Photo Continental.

I'm really blown away by how many people you've been in contact with and how generous they have all been. This is definitely the reason why I joined the ACMP. If there is anything I can do to help just let me know.

Posted to: Trampoline QLD Show Thread | Post Reply

Trampoline QLD

Hi everyone,
Just an update for the moment on the progression and WIP of getting trampoline events back up and running for QLD emerging photographers.

I've been in contact with Sacha, Sarah (Victoria Trampoline organiser) and Lisa (NSW Trampoline organiser) . They have all been fantastic with their information and guidance to the events. Really appreciate it ladies!

Sacha has emailed a listing of photographic institutes and photographers for suggested contact.
I'd be interested in going through all the full members listed on the ACMP site for QLD, and compiling a 'directory' to have a full listing broken down by what fields of photography the full members specialise in. I think this would be fantastic for us to have a 'quick reference' guide for when we meet up to plan a schedule and work on concepts for the events.
Im not sure if there used to be or currently is a list of non-ACMP contacts who would be AD's and other creatives who previously might have spoken at trampoline events in the past?

This afternoon I went to speak to Stefan, he has mentioned that his studio could host a few of the events, starting in July.
We spoke about the first event, and Stefan was kind enough to agree to kick it off as our first speaker!
As an outline of what we thought would be good to cover for the first event
- Stefan's industry experience and work.
- Redbrick Studio and what it offers and does.
- An introduction to the ACMP
- Benefits of the ACMP
- Introduction to the business side of of photography , including info out of the BBB open for discussion (understanding licensing, releases, terms of trade, releases and so on)

We briefly spoke about this, and Stefan suggested that we could discuss this further and in more detail during June.
___
Some ideas that I've thought of which could be good for events (these are just rough and would need some work, they're not in any specific order )

* A live demo night - If we could arrange for a fashion photographer to have a talk about their work, and then conduct a 30-45 min shoot doing a live demonstration and talk though while working with a model and making photos. ? Q&A session
(Concept not limited to fashion . Could be an automotive photographer? a product photographer? )

* Lastest gear - find a rep from a store or brand to talk about the brands/store& new cameras/gear. Q&A session

* Printers - Find a pro lab which would be interested in hosting an event at their lab, info on colour spaces, file prep, different papers, services, how the industry has changed over the years with printing....and so on. Q&A session
(this might not be toooo exciting for everyone, but not everyone knows how to obtain a good print in this world of digital display)

* It would be really good to be able to link up with an Art Director , and have an event where they can talk about the industry from their side, right across to how to get a foot in the door and what they look for and expect in work. Q&A session.

* Assistant training - an event dedicated to information on what would be expected of an assistant, how to be a good assistant, how to get assisting work, what the job involves and Q&A session.

*Photographer talks , showing their work and discussing their field of photography. Q&A sessions.
Ranging across commercial and media photography, for events to cater for the majority of people. I really would be keen to mix this up from one event to the next to keep it interesting, and wider spread with the passing on of knowledge from photographer to photographer.

*Folio reviews - bring in a selection of work to be discussed and constructively critiqued by either a guest speaker or peers?

I did have more that crossed my mind but have slipped at the moment. This is completely open for discussion and development! So fire away!
I am heading OS on the 20th , returning on the 31st (have two very long flights, so there will be plenty of time to develop ideas and grow concepts)
For the moment, my personal thought would be that having the events based in Brisbane might be the go based on it being a more central point ?

Meeting/event frequency : Once a month on a week night like Tuesday?

Think thats an ok starting point for a base to work from and grow on?

Rob

Posted to: Trampoline QLD Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi Scott,

I would be careful, I receive a lot of letters, with very flattering comments (fluffing ones ego) from company's all claiming to be the biggest and greatest and will love to sell my images and many are rather sus.......in these cases it a process of eliminating to sort out the good ones from the others. Its the financial percentages and their target audience you should look at. Also most of the photogs that shoot mostly stock, seem to go on volume and many do not commit to one agency as an exclusive so that they can spread their images over all the agencies. There's a top stock photography in Denmark earning huge dollars doing this, his philosophy is do not sign exclusives to one agency which I found an interesting read.

Posted to: AbacaPress Photo Agency Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi Penelope,

When I checked their websites the French one seemed unusual to navigate around and I expected more from a substantial agency dealing in images.

The USA website that has Terms and Conditions that I could find for Abaca did not seem coherent in places, not to a standard I would expect for an agency that was around since 2002 as they state.

I appreciate your attention and suggestions. Thank you.

Scott

Posted to: AbacaPress Photo Agency Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi Scott,

From what I have researched so far, Abaca USA is a subsidiary of AbacaPress France. One is picture agency and the other stock. In 2002 Getty Images was buying them out, not sure if this went through.

Looks fine so far, just check their T and Cs (terms and conditions) and if you are happy to become part of this agency there is no negative evidence that I could find.

Penelope

Posted to: AbacaPress Photo Agency Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi Penelope,

Was going to make a new post tonight with an update.
Last week I was in contact with the organisers for NSW and Vic , they were both really helpful and offered some great starting advice!
I've been speaking to Stefan about the events, he has mentioned that he would be able to host a few of them at his studio. I will be going to chat to him today at 14:30 and can add those details to the new post this evening
Also been in contact with Sacha, she has been amazing with helping out with guidance and info.
Later this afternoon I can draft up some details, an update and post it into a new fresh post to start with discussion tonight.
Thanks,
Rob

Hi Alistair, I've just seen your post below now about the Broadbeach Blues Festival, unfortunately I cant make that, I am leaving to go overseas on the 20th until the 31st...

Posted to: Mentorships and assisting for emerging photographers? Show Thread | Post Reply

Be careful with school uniforms that are specific to a school, you would be best to go for generic uniforms. If this is an advertising job they would or should be aware of the limitations dealing with kids. Definitely have to get a guardian or parent to sign a release. If this is going through an agency, check that they have done this, dont guess that their staff has, as it might back fire on you. You might be able to hire uniforms depends on what the colour and style they are looking for.

There are releases for members to download from this site, you can insert your own logo. Make sure each child has permission

Posted to: Releases Show Thread | Post Reply

It will depend on how "newsy" the photo is what they pay, eg if you have a hot celebrity shot with more than two people involved they will pay more $ than a general news story. If its hot they will want exclusive rights to be published. Newspapers have diffference sections, editors etc so it depends on them.

Posted to: Newspaper request for "credit" not payment Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi guys!

I agree with most of Andrews points, Sorry Des! - i do agree with your idea of having people learn about a discussion via Facebook and then login to ACMP website for further details.

I don't think you can rely on a lack of new posts on the forum from new members as any indication that they prefer Facebook. Lambs follow sheep which follow shepards.

There are some very simple tools such as RSS feeds that I would suggest you have your webmaster link from this sites forums to the Facebook page. that will automatically post a new update each time a new forum topic is created. I have in the past used a great Facebook app called RSS Graffiti

Heres a link to a great article about how to make the most of the new Facebook timeline pages. http://www.jonloomer.com/2012/02/29/facebook-timeline-for-pages-timeline-and-page-tabs/
It covers things like how the default landing page is no longer available, how to choose which tabs are visible etc. I think that providing some clear links back to the ACMP website and forums would help drive traffic.

You can also create some pages/tabs with frames displaying live content from the ACMP website including a login page for the forums. The only issue is the maximum width of the frames is 810px so id suggest creating a special login page (that isn't displayed on the ACMP website) that allows a user to login to their ACMP account and then opens in a new tab/window. With most users ticking the 'remember me' option this would provide them with a very quick method to login to the ACMP website from the Facebook page - but then again clicking on a link from an RSS feed would also require a login.

I'm not the most technical person so there could be some technical or security issues i don't know about that would prevent any of these suggestions being used.

Posted to: Posting on the forum!

Hi Andrew
The "Normally" survey was presented in Melbourne Sept 2011, presented in part by Ian McKenzie: (Ticket price was about $50 as I recall)
Mr. Ian McKenzie, Hon.

Thanks for replying Des.

When I said most people I should have clarified that as what I've witnessed in recent discussions and also my own personal views and those of photographers I know and speak to in the industry. Sorry for the generalisation and thanks for the clarification on the facts.

On the social media thing most of the questions I want to ask are not questions I want to put myself out there in the public forum asking. There's a definite benefit to keeping some topics behind closed doors and that's what I'm referring to in my posts. It would be so great to start these types of discussions with a renewed enthusiasm for an ACMP community forum. But I guess the movement across to facebook is easier for most. So I do understand the avoidance of people posting here. Is there some way to migrate this forum across to Facebook with a "members only" discussion group on Facebook or does this already exist? Maybe that would be the solution?

I really feel people should see the benefit of having a more industry based private discussion with members of the ACMP like yourself and also people like Sacha who I met with today and kindly donated her time. I would have thought that would be of major benefit to anyone most of all new members etc. It's really good to see some responses though from people like yourself and other board members so thank you. I myself am also more than willing to put my hand up to also offer what advice I can to members that need it.

What are your thoughts on the private facebook group for members?

Posted to: Posting on the forum!

Thank for your response Andrew.
Good on you, keep the questions coming in. Just remember, as most of us don't have desk jobs and are nearly always on location or in a studio, we don't get to sit in front of a computer too often. So if there is anything pressing, pick up the phone and give us a call. At least that way you know you have positive contact. General discussion though is healthy and encouraging.
The only point you mention which is evidentially wrong is that you refer to "most people" and a view taken by "every new member". I'm afraid this isn't the case. Most people and most new members aren't as interested in the forums as you might imagine. They have clearly told us that by their feedback and show it to us by the stats and the lack of contribution.
To answer your last question, if you put up a post for discussion in the forum, I think it is really good to mention it in as many related social media as you can to help drive people hear. If they want to come, then they will know about it. In fact....I just did as I am posting this! Lets get the ball rolling again.
Des

Posted to: Posting on the forum!

Hey Des

I think the issue here for most people especially new members is that the Forum, especially the "Members" forum is something exclusive and also something people like myself and others pay money to gain access to. A lot of photographers need help and join bodies like the ACMP for these specific reasons and see getting access to a forum like this as a really important knowledge base unavailable in the mainstream where they can ask established and veteran photographers questions that will actually be answered. More so questions that are relevant to our local industries as opposed to information that's already on forums in the US or UK that might be close to the point. That's the view I believe is taken by every new member including myself so yes it's disappointing when things on here go unanswered especially when we're paying to be included.

I see a lot of value in being a member of the ACMP 100%. But having people within the ACMP actively involved in an "exclusive" forum is something I know was the tipping point for me to join up. I see the benefit of facebook and involving the greater community but is there a way to remind ACMP members that the exclusive community is important to be involved in?

Posted to: Posting on the forum!

Hello!

It has been pointed out recently that the forum is lacking a little (a lot?) from input from the membership and board. Yes, that's true. Forums used to be one of the few points of contact and communication on-line and were a great place for discussions. However, with the advent of Facebook, twitter and other social media, the populace has shifted around a little. The ACMP are following and accommodating the crowd, the membership. Our stats show us that Facebook is growing and the forums are fading.

This is not the end of the forums! It is however, changing the nature of what should be discussed and focussed on here. The emphasis is a little different. I suggest that if people want to throw out a general subject for discussion, that's great. It would also be worth putting a reference to it on Facebook to bring people to the forum to follow it.

I would suggest that if anyone is looking for immediate attention, or has a pressing issue, then they contact the administrator directly, or a board member, for a quicker response. I personally have this issue with my own business. I have clients contact me with queries or bookings via, Phone directly to my mobile, phone to the office, SMS to my mobile, email, DM over Facebook and DM via Twitter. It's very frustrating and I am educating them to make the first port of a call my office phone line where I pay a fortune to someone to sit there multi tasking! Still, they persist and that means I have to keep checking 4-5 different places to make sure I haven't missed anything. This is an issue that has only developed over recent times with the advent of first, social media and secondly, Smartphones. It is the digital age and people seem to expect an immediate response. I believe, if you want an immediate response you need positive contact...phone them and speak to them. If you are happy for a possible delayed response, use email etc. I think the forums slip in to the latter category these days. But I still love them!

Just saying!

Des Harris ACMP Board Member.

Posted to: Posting on the forum!

Hi All,

I have read about a "Normally" survey that was done by the ACMP or AIPP involving current industry rates. I'm quite interested to get a copy. There was a one off seminar run by the ACMP that I've found but no results anywhere online.

If anyone has a copy I would greatly appreciate them posting it here or emailing me.

Thank you.

Posted to: "Normally" Survey Show Thread | Post Reply

Re: Print Licencing fees

First off. Ask the paper what they would be willing to pay. Secondly ask if they can give you more work in future. Finally editorial day rates in my experience for newspaper mags and lift outs can range from $300 for a freelance newspaper photographer to $750 for a full day. Give or take $100. Normally out of pocket expenses are on top. You can charge for lighting with some of them and especially travel.

So if you factor this in that the job you have shot may have taken a half day or a full day that's probably what they are expecting to pay for it. However don't sell yourself short. Ask them if they have a budget for it, ask them what their normal DPS (double page spread) rate is for purchasing images, and try to get as much info as possible whilst remaining friendly on the phone to them!

It's up to your negotiating powers how much you can get them for which is not the greatest answer to hear but hopefully the above rates can give you a guide of what they would have paid someone to shoot it outright.

Posted to: Print Licencing fees Show Thread | Post Reply

Re: Newspaper request for "credit" not payment

Also good to note here is that Newspapers pay approx $250 per use for an image from stock or other papers or freelance photographers if it's a one off use in general. Of course higher prices for more valuable images are also available. Don't let anyone talk you into giving your work away. Stand strong and 9 times out of 10 they will come back to you.

If they can't pay you ask for advertising credit. Or a free subscription to the paper!

If on the other hand it's for a magazine editorial that is going to promote your portfolio for a fashion spread or something similar then it can be worth your while to get your work published. Just remember to have your credit line listed as your website and not your name as people are more likely to head to your website if they like your work than they are to Google you.

Posted to: Newspaper request for "credit" not payment Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi Andrew, how are you?
Thank you for the reply and info, never knew that one could buy generic uniforms! Thats good to know.
The brief is on site where you browse through jobs listed, go shoot content and submit it, then the client selects out of the submitted content and once the selected submissions are 'awarded' then payment & images are transferred. The submissions close off tonight or tomorrow for this one...
Its an interesting site/service. Really going to be looking into in for some work.

Saw the recent post of the Playtex work you did, really love your style of work. Actually really like all your work..
Not sure if you still have the portrait of the gent whispering into the ladies ear on your site, its so incredibly powerful, it feels like he was whispering something you were not supposed to of said and she is just piecing right into your soul with her stare.

See if the client can purchase "generic" school uniforms instead. It sounds like they have budget for this. There are uniform shops all over the place. Or get a stylist involved. That will avoid the issue and a whole lot of red tape.

Posted to: Releases Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi,
I've just come across a brief that is requiring photos of 2 children, a boy and girl aged 12/13 for a Medical Brochure.
I understand that a minor release would be needed , and to be signed by a legal guardian / parent and it would be the best option to have them there at all times while shooting.
The part thats spiked my interest and lead to this post, the company has stated in the brief that they need the kids 1. in standard normal casual clothes and 2. wearing school uniforms. (they outlined a shot list that they are after*)

For future knowledge and understanding, what exactly would be the process as there is now the factor of introducing a school's uniform into the equation, and inadvertently linking the school to the photos?

I would absolutely love to apply for brief's like this as its $2K a photo(in this specific case) and they need 6 photos, but I dont have a blue card and am unsure of the process/ releases further needed when something like a school's uniform is introduced into the equation..?

Thanks,
Rob

*What We Are Looking For

School age children for a medical research program GP Guide.
Girls and boys aged 12 to 13 years of age.
Looking for 6 shots.
1.

Hi Storm, Rob and Alaistar,

Will advise sometimes you may not get in touch with Sacha immediately as she works part time and also a Producer so lots of knowledge and background in the industry. To be honest, she does move than just administer for the ACMP, also assists all the trampoline groups, the Projections, which you have to be part of and I would suggest that you mention this to Sacha as a Queensland exhibition and presence in September 2012 would be great. You all should enter into Projections as well and you can get in touch with Lisa Cross via Sacha to include this into Trampoline. Projections has a website and its another ACMP project for emerging photographers to get an opportunity if you are selected as a finalist learn from the best including a free workshop, last years was with Satchi and Satchi. Projections is an Austraiian wide competition to showcase our best up and coming photographers.

Good idea about including more information, we have a board meeting next week and will add this to the discussions/agenda.

As I think of more information will pass on. thanks Penelope

Posted to: Mentorships and assisting for emerging photographers? Show Thread | Post Reply

Hi Lisa, thank you for the info and updates
Totally understand that the ACMP is made up of full time working pro's and volunteering , greatly appreciate all the dialog
I think a small PDF email or 'welcome pack' (I did receive some literature with my BBB when it arrived) structured according to membership type would be perfect for new members to briefly explain details like what has been covered in this thread. The lack on my/our behalf of understanding things like how the trampoline events actually work, I feel have contributed to the snowballing that happened.

Would it be ok for me to email yourself or Penelope to obtain an email address for Sacha?
I am very interested in being part of setting up the trampoline events for Brisbane / QLD , as it has been mentioned that you all are full time working professionals, I have only managed to get in contact briefly with Sacha last week, I think it would be better if I was to email so a reply with the info on what we would need to do on our side to get the ball rolling can be provided when Sacha or another member has time in their schedule?

Thank you,
Rob

Posted to: Mentorships and assisting for emerging photographers? Show Thread | Post Reply
